Under Abd al-Mu'min and later Yacoub al-Mansour, Marrakech became the centre of an empire from al-Andalus to today's Senegal. The Koutoubia, whose minaret inspired the Giralda and the Hassan Tower, is its manifesto.

The minaret remains the absolute landmark of the city. No nearby building may rise above it.

Notice the polylobed arches and stone friezes. Walk around the mosque to feel its proportion.
