Marrakech owes its birth to the Almoravids, a dynasty from south of the Sahara who made it the capital of an empire.
Historical context
Around 1070, under Youssef Ibn Tachfin, the Almoravids established Marrakech as a forward base. They introduced khettara irrigation that allowed the city to thrive on a semi-arid plain.
Why it matters today
The earthen ramparts you walk along today largely descend from that era. The city also owes its water and palm-grove ecosystem to it.
What to notice on site
Touch the warm rammed earth of the ramparts. Look for the old gates: Bab Agnaou, Bab Doukkala, Bab er-Robb.
